OUR HISTORY

African-American Historic Preservation Committee, Incorporated is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to preserving, documenting, and promoting Afro-American historical and cultural heritage in Galveston County, Texas. It represents the 1867 Settlement Historical District, the only Reconstruction-era African-American community in the county, and is made possible by the Galveston County Historical Commission.

AAHPC is dedicated to making a difference by working together to educate all on the forgotten history of the black cowboys that pioneered the Chisholm Cattle Trails before and after the Civil War – Calvin Bell, Kneeland Britton, Thomas Caldwell and Dave Hobgood – and later, as freedmen, founded the 1867 Settlement community in Texas City that is listed in the National Registry.

The Bell, Britton, Caldwell and Hobgood families pioneered the community, which has been self-sustained for more than 150 years.

OUR FOCUS

The organization strives to preserve the heritage of the historical district by utilizing positive aspects to stimulate public interest, support; promoting growth, revitalization, restoration, outreach and education.

It uses history as an avenue to empower future generations with knowledge, appropriate skills and training. Emphasis is placed on creating a strong and viable community.

OUR COMMUNITY

Assistance from community stakeholders is paramount to our success. Without your contributions, serving those in our area would not be possible.

We are dedicated to making a difference within our community. We achieve this goal one donation, one opportunity, at a time. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
